Things to Know About Scoliosis

Scoliosis occurs when the spine becomes curved and rotated to the side abnormally. Idiopathic scoliosis is the most common type and its cause is unknown. Our chiropractor in Bradenton at Lakewood Ranch Chiropractic can help with scoliosis with the use of chiropractic care.

Scoliosis Usually Begins in Adolescence

More than 80% of scoliosis cases start in adolescence. The cause for this isn’t fully understood but the growth rate during this period is thought to play a role. Once an adolescent reaches maturity then the curve is less than 40 degrees and will likely stop progressing. Due to this, the key factor in treating this condition is to identify the condition early on and prevent the curve from reaching this degree by the maturity of the skeleton.

Diagnosis Can Be Easy to Miss

In the beginning, it can be hard to identify scoliosis since there are no noticeable symptoms or signs. An official diagnosis happens when the sideways curve becomes 10 degrees or greater. However, a person with this degree of curve isn’t likely to notice it. As the curve progresses then it can be noticed with regular checkups. In some cases, a friend or parent may notice the child has a curvature.

Active Treatment May Not Be Needed

Even with an official diagnosis, many curves don’t progress enough to require treatment or cause any further problems. For the majority of people, an evaluation every four to six months until maturity is enough to manage the condition. As long as the curve does not progress more than five degrees in six months, it’s not considered a risk for getting worse.

Rigid Braces Can Stop the Progression

If the curve reaches at least 25 degrees then a brace will be needed. Rigid braces are a common nonsurgical treatment to slow the curve progression, reduce the likelihood of surgery, and help with pain management.

Surgery Is the Last Resort

In some cases, if the curve progresses past 45 degrees or 50 degrees, or when a brace isn’t working, surgery may be needed. Surgery has an extended recovery period that can last up to a year and come with other complications, which is why many choose to visit a chiropractor for pain management instead of surgery. If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with scoliosis call Lakewood Ranch Chiropractic at (941) 739-2900. Our chiropractor in Bradenton can provide the pain relief you need without surgery.
