Bulging Disc

Any neck or back pain that results in numbness or tingling can be quite debilitating.  Suddenly, even every day movements become painful or hindered.  Often, a bulging disc is the culprit of back pain.  Luckily, chiropractors, like Lakewood Ranch Chiropractic, regularly help treat patients with this condition.  Below, let's take a closer look at what a bulging disc is, the symptoms, and how a chiropractor can help.

What Is a Bulging Disc?

The spine is made up of several individual bones called vertebrae.  In between each of the vertebrae are tiny discs.  These discs have a tough exterior, but inside are filled with a soft cartilage type substance.  The discs act to help cushion the vertebrae as you move through bending, twisting, or impactful movements.  Sometimes these discs can become misshapen and start to flatten out.  The disc takes on the appearance of a hamburger that is too large to fit on its bun.  When this occurs, it is known as a bulging disc.  This condition usually occurs in older patients and is a result of ongoing wear and tear on the body.

What Are the Symptoms?

Typically, bulging discs occur in the lower, or lumbar, region of the spine, but they can occur anywhere in the back.  People often report having a numb or tingling sensation in the shoulders, arms, or fingers if the bulging disc is in the neck or upper back.  For bulging discs in the lumbar region people feel the numbness and tingling in their legs and buttocks.  Pain can range from a dull ache to a severe, stabbing pain in extreme cases.

How Can a Chiropractor Help?

A chiropractor can help with many of the symptoms associated with a bulging disc.  First, your chiropractor will work with you to fully diagnose where in the spine the bulging disc is located.  This is accomplished through a series of X-Rays or MRIs.  From there, your chiropractor will prescribe a treatment plan to help alleviate the symptoms.  Many manual manipulations can help take undue stress off of nerves and muscles that may be strained due to the bulging disc.  A chiropractor may recommend a series of strengthening exercises or stretches to help strengthen the muscles in the neck or back.  Some light physical therapy may be recommended to keep the pain and tingling associated with the bulging disc to a minimum.
