Spinal Decompression FAQ

Spinal decompression is a non-surgical procedure that rehabilitates the discs between the vertebrae. This therapy works by gently stretching the spine, reducing pressure on the spinal column and spinal discs. To help you learn more about spinal decompression and how it can help you, Dr. Nichols at Lakewood Ranch Chiropractic in Bradenton has compiled a list of frequently asked questions regarding spinal decompression.

.

How does spinal decompression work?

Spinal decompression works by stretching the spine to produce a vacuum between the discs. The vacuum effect allows herniated and bulging discs to retract. Spinal decompression therapy promotes the flow of oxygen-rich nutrients to damaged discs, promoting the body’s natural ability to repair itself.

What conditions can spinal decompression treat?

Spinal decompression therapy can treat many conditions, including:

  • Sciatica
  • Back pain
  • Neck pain
  • Tingling and numbness in the extremities
  • Herniated or bulging discs
  • Pinched or irritated nerves

How long do spinal decompression therapy sessions usually last?

Each session typically takes between 25 and 40 minutes. However, the session length will depend on the treatment plan that was created by our chiropractor. A number of additional therapies can be used in conjunction with spinal decompression for a holistic treatment plan.

What can I expect during a typical session?

You will remain fully clothed during your spinal decompression session. You will then be put into two harnesses by our chiropractor. One of the harnesses will be wrapped around your chest, while the other one will go around your pelvis. Our chiropractor will control the table via a computer that will gently decompress the bones of the spine. Spinal decompression will relieve your pain, restore your mobility, and improve your body’s natural ability to heal itself.

Is spinal decompression therapy painful?

You should not feel any pain with spinal decompression. Most patients notice immediate results after their first sessions.
