Whiplash FAQs

According to statistics, more than three million Americans suffer a whiplash injury every single year. If you have suffered a whiplash injury in an auto accident or due to some other cause in Bradenton, FL, our chiropractor can help. Here are some the most common questions we hear about whiplash at Lakewood Ranch Chiropractic.

.

What Causes Whiplash?

A whiplash injury is caused when a sudden back-and-forth motion of the head injures the muscles and tendons in the neck. The most common cause is a rear-end vehicle collision. When another vehicle hits a person's rear bumper, it causes a sudden and violent head motion that injures the neck. Whiplash can also be caused by an on-the-job injury, during competitive sports, or by a fall.

What Does Whiplash Feel Like?

Whiplash can cause a severe reduction in your quality of life. The truly awful thing about whiplash is that it can sometimes take days, weeks, or even months after the actual injury before symptoms appear. You might think you went through an auto accident unscathed, only to develop whiplash several weeks later.

The main indicator of whiplash is painful muscle stiffness in the neck, which makes it difficult or impossible to turn your head. The neck and shoulders become sensitive and tender (in a painful sense), while the range of motion in your neck is severely restricted. In more severe cases, whiplash leads to headaches and blurred vision and can prevent you from sleeping at night.

How Can Chiropractic Care Treat Whiplash?

Chiropractic massage and spinal adjustment are the two main methods we use to treat whiplash patients at Lakewood Ranch Chiropractic in Bradenton. Therapeutic massage can increase your circulation in the affected muscles, in addition to relieving the whiplash tension and pain. Spinal adjustments reduce the pain while realigning the bones in the neck and spine to ensure that nerve signals from the brain are being properly sent and received by your central nervous system. This is not an instant process, though. It will take multiple appointments with our chiropractor to alleviate the whiplash.

Our chiropractor will also teach you stretches and exercises to help you recover and can offer nutritional healing advice. Our doctor will even talk with you about lifestyle adjustments and body mechanics that can help you to heal faster.
