Tunnel Syndrome

What is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

The narrowing of the passageways of the palms of the wrists due to the compressed meridian nerve is known as carpal tunnel syndrome. The meridian is responsible for providing sensation on the palm side of the thumb, reaching the index, middle and a portion of the ring finger, excluding the little finger. Known as one of the most common syndromes that affect the hand, this condition may cause a sensation of numbness, weakness, cramping, and pain.

What Are The Symptoms?

Over time, the symptoms of carpal tunnel may begin to present themselves such as the sensation of tingling or numbness that is prominent in the fingers or the palm of the hand. The prominent reason for these symptoms may be due to inefficient work ergonomics. Other symptoms may include:

  • Swollen fingers — one or more fingers may be swollen or even have a feeling of lameness
  • Limited mobility in the wrists — this is commonly experienced during sleep due to flexing in the wrists resulting in wrist pain and poor sleep quality
  • Decreased grip strength — individuals may find it difficult to grip or hold on to small items like a pen or fork and may also experience difficulty opening

What Causes Carpal Tunnel

The sharp pains experienced with this syndrome can be contributed to excessive pressure on the median nerve and the wrist combined with other factors that are solely contributed to the nerve on its own. The following factors can be contributed to the syndrome:

  • The retention of fluid due to menopause or pregnancy
  • Autoimmune diseases such as hypothyroid or rheumatoid arthritis
  • Diabetes
  • Trauma to the wrist
  • High blood pressure
  • Aging
