Common Golf Injuries

Some of the most common golf injuries players suffer from include the spine and lower back. Muscle and lumbar strains are common, but so are herniated discs. Often, muscle strain occurs in players who swing the golf club harder than they should. It can also happen if you shift the position of your body too quickly. In addition, an improper golf swing can aggravate a herniated disc you may already have. Lumbar pain usually results from standing at an incorrect angle when swinging the golf club.

It is also not unusual for shoulder injuries to occur or to be made worse when playing. Too much repetitive motion in the shoulders can result in injuries such as frozen shoulder, tendinitis, and bursitis. Even in the shoulder that isn't primarily used during golf games, injuries can occur. This is most often seen in rotator cuff and cartilage tears. However, more serious injuries incurred as a result of playing golf include the separation and sprain of the acromioclavicular joints. Elbow injuries are often common. Golfer's elbow is a common problem in which the protruding part of the elbow comes in contact with forearm tendons, causing wrist and forearm pain. In many cases, this injury occurs when a golfer uses a backswing that's overextended. Many golfers suffer from wrist injuries as well. There are different types of wrist injuries, such as tendinitis and ulnar tunnel syndrome. These injuries cause pain in not only the wrist but the hands as well.
