Causes and Symptoms of a Herniated Disc

What are the Causes and Symptoms of a Herniated Disc?

At Lakewood Ranch Chiropractic, we have helped many patients find relief from a herniated disc without resorting to back surgery. We invite you to learn more about the symptoms of a herniated disc as well as the causes, so that you can seek our attention for herniated disc treatment if you should need it.

What are herniated disc symptoms?

A slipped or herniated disc can occur at any part of the spine, from your lower back all the way up to your neck. This type of injury is common in the low back, however. Symptoms that indicate a slipped disc, as opposed to a bulging disc, include:

  • Pain radiating down one side of the body

  • Pain when walking

  • Numbness, burning, or tingling

  • Muscle weakness

  • Pain that gets worse at night, or after sitting or standing

What are the causes of a herniated disc?

Slipped discs occur when the outer ring of your disc wears down or tears enough to allow the inside of the disc to slip out. While slipped discs can happen to anyone, at any age, they are more common among men, overweight individuals, and people aged 35-45.

Both activity and sedation can cause a slipped disc; the latter because overweight, sedentary individuals put their spine under greater pressure, creating a better environment for a slipped disc.

This injury often happens after you lift something large and heavy. Twisting and turning motions also harm the discs in your back. If you have an active job, or need to regularly lift heavy objects as part of your job, you may be more likely to suffer this injury.

If you do suffer from disc herniation, we can soothe the pressure and inflammation, healing you without the use of pain medication or surgical procedures. Our natural, holistic treatments work by realigning the spine and soothing inflamed tissue.

Do the symptoms listed above look like anything you have been experiencing? If so, you may have a herniated disc. We urge you to call our Bradenton FL chiropractor at 941-739-2900 for a consultation.
