Scoliosis of the Spine

Scoliosis of the Spine: Causes and Symptoms

Scoliosis is an abnormal curvature of the spine.  In individuals with scoliosis, the spine curves towards the left or right.  This causes one hip and shoulder to appear higher than the other, and it can make one leg appear shorter than the other.  If you live in Bradenton, Dr. Nichols can diagnose and treat abnormal curvatures of the spine.

Causes and Risk Factors

Congenital scoliosis is present at birth.  Neuromuscular scoliosis is caused by certain muscle and nerve diseases, including spina bifida and cerebral palsy.  Degenerative scoliosis is generally caused by spinal injuries.

Scoliosis Symptoms

Chronic pain is not usually associated with abnormal curvatures of the spine.  If someone with scoliosis has pain, they should schedule an appointment with Dr. Nichols serving the community of Bradenton for an evaluation.  Pain is usually a symptom of another ailment, like a back injury.  Abnormal spinal curvature symptoms are typically visual.  One shoulder or hip may appear higher than the other.  One side of the ribcage may be more pronounced, and one leg may look shorter than the other.
